Chapter 10

One by one, the Seekers emerged from their hibernation chambers, like wind-up toy soldiers being unwrapped from their freshly minted boxes.

Captain Shila took the lead and pointed toward the elevator. “Let’s get out of here, now!”

Javier stayed close to her while the Marines formed a ring around them with their weapons at the ready. They entered the elevator, and Shila waved the glove over the panel, taking them down to the bottom level. There, Seeker soldiers marched from their chambers, forming a perfect queue into the corridors of the station.

The captain turned to Javier. “You claimed the Seekers believed us non-threatening. I hope you’re right, Professor.”

“What are our orders?” the leader of the Marines asked.

“We get back to our pod.” She directed everyone out of the elevator. “Put your rifles by your sides. Don’t make any aggressive moves.”

The Marines looked at her as if her commands didn’t compute. Regardless, they followed her instructions and walked out guarding her and Javier.

Making their way into the corridor was one of the scariest things Javier had ever done. No longer were they empty; instead, they were swarming with Seekers seemingly with one thing on their minds.

He flinched as a pair of them brushed past his shoulder. The Seekers stopped and stared at him but quickly moved on. “They’re ignoring us…”

“Let’s hope it stays that way.” Shila grabbed him by the arm to make him move a little quicker.

Javier passed the viewing catwalk and glanced at the soldiers entering the weapon ship through the docking section. “They’re preparing for something.”

“The question is, what?”

They continued their long trek back to the hangar deck, weaving through hoards of soldiers. At one point they passed by a weapons locker where the Seeker soldiers were handing their compatriots their rifles. The same ones that’d done so much damage to Susan Tai.

Through the large door into the hangar, they went where they witnessed the huge deployment of Seekers into their transport pods. The Marines made a beeline for their own retrofitted vessel and got the captain and Javier on board as quickly as they could.

“Best speed out of here!” Shila barked at her pilot.

Lieutenant Nyman didn’t complain and punched the ship’s engines, while everyone else strapped into their seats. The craft rose into the air, and he directed it through the exit aperture.

Javier’s heart pumped harder than it had for some time. He wouldn’t be happy until he’d left the inside of the horrific Seeker facility.

When they broke free, space appeared. One of the most beautiful sights he’d ever seen. They pushed at breakneck speed toward the Sabre, which thankfully was still there waiting for them.
